- A handsome and authentic Victorian antique writing slope, crafted from highly figured Rosewood with brass detailing. This piece, often referred to as a Campaign Desk Box due to its robust design, features a captivating history etched on its lid.
Key Features and Condition
Wood: Beautifully figured Rosewood exterior with rich, dark tones, often associated with high-quality 19th-century furniture. The interior reveals lighter secondary woods, likely Mahogany or Satinwood.
Campaign Style: Reinforced with brass edges and corner caps, giving it a durable, military or travel campaign aesthetic. Includes a working brass lock and key (as pictured).
Interior: The box opens to reveal a traditional writing surface, which is currently lined with a worn but richly coloured purple/plum velvet.
Storage & Secret Compartment: The slope lifts open to reveal a main storage compartment for papers. The upper section features smaller compartments, including an area for two original inkwells (two brass inkwell lids are visible, one on each side) and a central pen tray. A rare and desirable feature is the hidden compartment located behind the long, raised central panel, which slides or pivots to reveal three small secret drawers for concealing valuables, coins, or private correspondence.
Inscribed History (A Special Feature): The lid features a central, shield-shaped gilt inscription, which is clearly legible and dates the piece:
"F. B. Stubbs, 24. Oct. 1863, from W. & E. M. S." This personalized inscription adds significant historical and collectible value, marking it as a presentation piece or a personal gift from 1863.
